Wire-edge Bindings
Date: Saturday, April 5
Time: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM (with a break for lunch)
Fee: $70.00
Guest Artist Michael Jacobs knows that books with wire-edge bindings possess an understated elegance. In this class you will construct a four-panel accordion-fold book with pockets and inserts, bound with wire-edge hinges. The wires used to make this simple and strong binding can be completely hidden or exposed, and allow the pages to turn a full 360 degrees! This versatile binding style, developed by Daniel Kelm, is the instructor’s all-time favorite, and can be used to make fantastic interactive book structures and sculptures. You’ll complete one book project and start (and possibly finish) a second.
Completed books will differ from the samples shown as students personalize their projects by providing their own paper. Students should bring: 0.5 mm mechanical pencil with 2-H lead, eraser, 12 inch steel ruler, three-sided architect’s ruler with 1/16 inch scale (optional), scissors, X-Acto knife & utility knife with fresh blades in each, cutting mat, bone folder, fresh glue stick and scrap papers to protect work surface, decorative papers to embellish projects (optional), 1 piece scrap matboard - 7 inches square (to flatten cut wires), wire cutters & flat nose pliers (if you have them), 1/4 inch hole punch.
