Window Shade Book

This elegant and unusual little book features two sets of accordion-fold pages that pull down like a window shade! When closed, the hanging tassel wraps around the button closure on the front cover. Be inspired by many samples and a nifty variation. You will complete one book and one tassel in class and Michael will demo the steps for a second book with four window shades! Handout includes patterns for both books. Students should bring: 0.5 mm mechanical pencil with 2-H lead, eraser, 12 inch steel ruler, three-sided architect’s ruler with 1/16 inch scale (optional), scissors, X-Acto knife & utility knife with fresh blades in each, cutting mat, bone folder, fresh glue stick, small bottle of white glue and scrap papers to protect work surface, 1/16 or 1/8 inch hole punch and a bookbinders awl. Additionally, please bring the following components to create your projects (mat board in the required sizes will be available for purchase at the shop):
Components for WINDOW SHADE BOOK
1 piece of matboard or cardboard 2.5 x 4 inches
3 sheets 65-80 lb cardstock, 8.5 x 11 inches (book covers)
6 sheets text-weight papers 8.5 x 11 inches (pages)
small decorative papers to embellish cover (optional)

Components for TWO TASSELS
decorative yarn or narrow ribbon to for bodies (skirts) of tassels (10 ft)
5 ft.strong, thin cord to make hangers for tassels (5 feet)
thread (waxed linen, carpet, etc.) to tie tassels to hangers and form necks (3 feet)
1-6 beads to use for heads of tassels (bead holes need to be big enough for hanger cord)

Note: All papers will be visible on WINDOW SHADE BOOK project so choose papers that are compatible. Choose components for tassel that work well together and compliment or contrast nicely with your book cover. It might help to consider this project a working model.
